This 7-Pot Brain Strain pepper is insane in the membrane, and the man who created it sounds like he could be a rapper himself. On a fateful evening in 2008, David Cappiello introduced his new frankenpepper on TheHotPepper forum – a unique variant of the 7-Pot family with a wrinkly, bumpy texture, much like a brain. It quickly gained global recognition and status as one of the spiciest peppers in the world, with a complex flavor profile that had pepperheads rushing to test their tastebuds against its wrath.
The 7-Pot Brain Pepper Villain Origin Story
The 7-Pot Brain Strain comes from prestigious pepper lineage, and being hot hot hot runs in the family. Sharing much of its genetics with the notorious 7-Pot pepper race stemming from Trinidad and Tobago, the Brain Strain was born through a longstanding process known as selective breeding.
This process relies on saving seeds from peppers with desired characteristics over several generations, and then used to improve crops and grow new variants over time.
In breeding his creation, Cappiello knew what he was doing. He used the Trinidad 7-Pot, an infamous landrace known for its heat around the Caribbean, and seeds from the Trinidad Moruga Scorpion - a former world record holder for hottest pepper in the world. His calculated hybridization paid off – the 7-Pot Brain Strain would soon make its own ascent up the Scoville scale
